Digital Linguistics as Minor (30)

The international Master’s Minor in Digital Linguistics (30 ECTS credits) provides an introduction to computational linguistics and language technology for students from a wide range of academic backgrounds. No previous knowledge of computational linguistics or programming is required. After an introduction to the field and to programming, you can choose from a range of modules according to your interests.

The program introduces methods for acquiring, processing, and analyzing linguistic data. You will develop programming skills and learn to apply computational methods to large collections of language data. Depending on your interests, you can explore areas such as machine learning, machine translation, text mining, and other topics in computational linguistics and language technology.

The language of instruction is English.

Sample Curriculum

The sample curriculum shows one possible study plan for completing the program in four semesters as a full-time student. In a Major/Minor combination (120 ECTS credits in total), you will normally earn around 30 ECTS credits per semester. You may take fewer credits per semester, which will extend the duration of your studies accordingly.

For the Minor study program, we recommend starting in the Fall Semester.

Modular Structure of the Study Program

Each module is assigned to exactly one module group. To complete the program, you must earn at least 30 ECTS credits in the Minor overall and fulfill the requirements of the individual module groups.

In the module groups Core Modules of Digital Linguistics and Digital Linguistics in Practice, you must earn at least 24 ECTS credits in total and complete all compulsory modules. In Scientific Specialization, you must earn at least 6 ECTS credits.

At least 50% of the ECTS credits completed for the Minor must be graded.

Throughout the program, you will encounter different learning formats, combining theoretical foundations with scientific, technical, and practical experience.

Minimum ECTS Requirements for the Module Groups in the Minor 30

Admission Requirements

There are no subject-specific admission requirements for the Master’s Minor in Digital Linguistics. The program is therefore particularly suitable for students who want to add computational methods for working with language data to their academic profile without having previously studied computational linguistics or programming.

The Minor in Digital Linguistics (30 ECTS credits) cannot be combined with the Major in Computational Linguistics and Language Technology (90 ECTS credits).

If you have already completed a Major or Minor in Computational Linguistics at the Bachelor’s level, we recommend choosing the Master’s program in Computational Linguistics and Language Technology instead, as it provides advanced training building on previous knowledge in the field.
