Master's Program

The international Master’s program in Computational Linguistics and Language Technology deepens theoretical and methodological expertise in the automatic processing of spoken, written and signed language. Graduates are able to analyze complex research questions in computational linguistics, develop language technology systems according to scientific and engineering standards, and evaluate them empirically using annotated data and reproducible experimental methods.

The program places a strong emphasis on data-driven and neural approaches, including advanced machine learning, Transformer architectures, and large language models. Students extend their knowledge of machine translation, text mining, and multilingual and multimodal modeling, and gain experience in designing, conducting, and publishing state-of-the-art NLP experiments.

Another component of the curriculum is speech science and phonetics in combination with computational methods. This includes speech signal processing, instrumental phonetic analysis, speech perception, and applications such as forensic speech science and AI for language accessibility. Methods from digital linguistics, including experimental paradigms such as eye tracking, complement the computational modeling of language.

Through seminars, research-oriented modules, programming projects, and the Master’s thesis, students acquire the ability to critically assess current research, contribute novel approaches to AI-driven language technology, and carry out independent scientific work. The program prepares graduates for doctoral studies as well as for research-intensive positions in academia and industry.

How to obtain a Master's degree

In order to obtain a Master's degree, a total of 120 ECTS credits at Master's level must be obtained. This can be completed in 4 semesters of full-time study.
