Symbol Complexity in Visual Search and Reading

There is an association between the performance in visual search and reading skills. Within the context of the "Lesen im Blick" project, we investigate whether there is a difference in visual search behaviour between letter and non letter symbols. However, it might be difficult to distinguish whether such a difference is caused by a letter familiarity effect or by the varying complexity of the presented symbols. The goal of the proposed project would be to create a method that can determine the realtive complexity of specific symbols and letters based on Eye tracking data.
