Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

Dieter Andreas Studer

Wednesday 14:00-15:45

This (required) course provides a hands-on introduction to English phonetics and phonology. We look at the speech producing apparatus, the articulation and transcription of speech sounds, as well as their acoustics and perception. Special emphasis is given to speech production and articulatory phonetics. This will be followed by an introduction to general phonology, a description of the English sound system(s) based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and also an introduction to differences in accents of English around the world (Standard British and American English) and a section on contrastive phonetics (German- English). Students will learn to transcribe short passages of spoken English, which may be further practised in the tutorial that accompanies the lecture.
