[18.03.10] Ifi Colloquium: Linguistic extensions for Search Engines

How Search Engines Deal with Natural Language Relevance, Ranking, and Linguistics

Speaker: MA Johannes Stieler

Host: Martin Volk, IFI UZH

Dear All

You are cordially invited to attend the colloquium that will be held in English this Thursday, March 18, 2010 by

MA Johannes Stiehler
"How Search Engines Deal with Natural Language Relevance, Ranking, and Linguistics"

Hosted by Prof. Martin Volk

Date: Thursday, March 18, 2010
Time: 17:15 h
Room: BIN 2.A.01

Abstract

After a tentative definition of the terms relevance, perceived relevance and ranking I present some of the more „classical“ approaches to term weighting and relevance computation. In contrast to those techniques I sketch out some approaches used in commecial software. Based on this exposition we explore how linguistic extensions such as term variants (synonyms, inflection) and other additional information (e.g. multi-term expressions) can be fruitfully woven into these ranking frameworks and which special challenges surface in this context.

Biography

After studying computational linguistics, computer science and Romance languages Johannes Stiehler started working with Fast Search & Transfer, a vendor of a commercial search platform. Being convinced that linguistic processing is key to delivering good search results, he focused on designing and implementing linguistic components that balance advanced processing approaches with commercial requirements. After having worked as „linguistic architect“ with FAST for several years, Johannes Stiehler took up heading the information technology department at SEARCHTEQ GmbH, a company developing and operating a local search service for Germany.
